You deserve to be happy, to be loved, and to be cared for—as a matter of fact you said yes to that ‘special’ person now tormenting you because you wanted a relationship that will make you a fulfilled person. However, things have not gone exactly the way you planned. On the contrary, you are being made to go through some unexpected pressure and you feel: like “no this cannot be happening to me; am I dreaming or what?” The truth is that you could be in an abusive relationship without knowing it.

Here are seven important signs to show that you might be involved in an abusive relationship:

  • He harms you physically in any way, including kicking you, slapping you, hitting you on the face, grabbing you, pushing you and shaking you.
  • He always threatens to harm or bring you down if you leave the relationship. Sometimes he even go as far as threatening to harm himself if you walk out of the relationship.
  • He tries to take charge of different aspects of your life, including the way you dress, people you hang out with and what you say or how you should say what you want to say.
  • He often humiliates you and makes you feel inferior whenever someone says something nice about you. He feels insecure and threatened, especially when someone or colleague commends your looks or efforts.
  • He always wants to know your movements and demands regular updates on where you are.
  • Always puts the blame on you, and make you feel as if you are always in the wrong.
  • He is always jealous or angry when you spend time with your friends.

You should also watch out for words like: “if you love me you would…” This could be a sign that your partner is trying to manipulate you. He tries to take control of your life; everything is centred on him. He rarely cares about what you want and wants you to believe that you are nothing without him.

These are just some of the common red flags, and indications that you are being abused by your partner.
