Watch It! Your Partner Could Be Subjecting You To Emotional Abuse

1 Mins read

As Africans, we only define abuse in relationship as a situation where the woman is being physically manhandled or beaten. We endure marriage as long as the man does not attack us physically. We or our parents or loved ones or friends or colleagues or siblings never see anything wrong when arguments in relationship have not resorted to physical assaults. Did you know that a man or woman can also be abused in so many other ways without being physically attacked?

What is emotional abuse?

One of the feelings you may have in such a relationship is that there is no way out of the relationship or that without your abusive partner you have nothing. You feel trapped and feel you have reached a bust stop where you can no longer walk out of the relationship—it is like a cul de sac thing.

Emotional abuse may include some or all of the following:

  • Verbal abusesuch as yelling, name-calling, blaming, and shaming.
  • Isolation, intimidation, and controlling
  • Abusers who use emotional or psychological abuse often throw in threats of physical violence or other repercussions if you don’t do what they want.

You may think that physical abuse is far worse than emotional abuse, since physical violence can send you to the hospital and leave you with scars. However, the scars of emotional abuse are very real, and they run deep. As a matter of fact, emotional abuse can be just as damaging as physical abuse.

Marriage comes with loads of goodies as well as some pains; but you have to be wise to know when a line is being crossed by your partner.
