Matters of the Heart

The married woman who found a new love

Situations have hit me in the face, and I’ve asked myself, “can I be honest at this point? “Is the truth relevant now?” “Is it really good to be good all the time?” Even if it is good to be good all the time, because of the circumstances of things in our day to day lives, we won’t agree to it.

The reason why the country is filled with corrupt individuals is not just because people find joy in being bad than good, but because they’re at a point where all they think about is how to stay alive not how to live (hope you know the difference)

Opportunity, they say, makes the thief, and not until you’ve overcome a challenge, do not brag about your ability to overcome it.

When this story came to me, I felt like, would I have been kind enough to let my desire down? I would I have taken the same step? I just couldn’t answer because I had never been in such crossroad before.

It is understandable.

On the other side of the story, I began to wonder, what if the acclaimed love was a facade for another motive? What if this was a scam? But then it is said that the riskiest thing to do is not to take risk.

Again, considering the condition of the woman, how unattractive she was, how dirty and with the fact that she was the mother of three, it is not bad that one wonders where the attraction came from, or is love really a blind man like it is claimed?

Let’s here from Lara’s account:

I was with my ex-husband for 13 years. He loved me as I, him. We’ve struggled in the village all our lives.

First of all, I’d love to let you know that he took my virginity. I was 15 when I got pregnant for him. I was in school. My parents gave up on me, I had no one to lean on for help, only Matthew.

His parents were quite not well to do, they never cared for him even before he got me pregnant. When he found out I was pregnant, he didn’t run away, he took full responsibility as young as he was. He started working tirelessly. He wanted to be able to provide for the kid when I finally put to birth.

He also decided that we officially got married before I give birth. I agreed and our parents officially joined us together in wedlock, traditionally.

After years of farming in the village and selling off our farm produce so we could fend for ourselves, I got pregnant again. We had our second baby two years after the first one.

Matthew had great hopes, he wanted to show his parents and mine that even in our mistakes, we would make something of ourselves and shame those who thought it had ended for us.

When he found out that life in the village wasn’t doing us good, he started making plans for the city. (I can’t hide the fact that I was and I’m still proud of how resilient Matthew was. He never gave up, he never made me feel like I thwarted his future)

It took quite a lot of time before we could relocate to the city, because the friend whom he saved money with in the city so he could get a place to stay played him. All the money Matthew saved with him were all gone the day Matthew was ready. His friend didn’t find a house, he squandered all Matthew’s money. This was why he first decide that he would register a bank account.

When we finally got to the city, to support my husband, I started hawking fruits in the market. We had another child making them three, I used to take the last one with me to the market whenever I was there. Matthew was a pump attendant in a fuelling station.

We found joy in our union, anytime he came from work, he would tell me the drama and hassles of his day, so would I. Our kids were quite skinny but they were alive and Matthew was already making plans to register Goodness, our first born, in a public school.

Mr George was my top fruit customer, he usually buys quite a lot of fruits from me and most times would leave his change with me. I found him interesting only because he bought a lot from me. I used to tell Matthew about him, but when I found out how he started reacting towards the fact that a rich man was always buy fruits from me, I stopped feeding him the stories, although Mr George kept his kind patronage.

After I’d established a good buyer and seller relationship with Mr George, he requested that I know his place because there were times he didn’t have the time to come buy fruits and those days he bought fruits somewhere else. If I knew his place I’d rather have the fruits sent to him or just bring it to him by myself.

It was a harmless request as far as I was concerned. All I thought was that my business was flourishing and nothing more.

Even if that was what I thought/believed it to be, I still didn’t tell Matthew. He would be jealous and might even ask me to switch my business to something else.

I started delivering fruits to Mr George, at least, twice a week. He was a kind man, he only took his fruits and let me go my way. I was even gaining more because he’d pay double my transport fare and also pay more than required for the fruits.

But on the fifth week of our business together, he made advances at me. It was in his sitting room I tried to stop him, but he wouldn’t listen, so I let him have what he wanted.

I stopped going to his place for sometimes. I did not tell Matthew what happened. I wanted to bury everything and didn’t want to have anything to do with the man anymore.

But after sometime, I started missing Mr George, not only the business but what he did to me and how he did it to me.

I had to pay him a visit. I’d gone with fruits, but of course, I knew he could tell I was there for what he’d done the last time. He didn’t even respect himself, he rushed me again.

While Matthew worked at the fuelling station, I spent my days in Mr George’s house, he’d buy all my fruits and give me money to take home.

Matthew began to irritate me. The hard working attractive guy in him died in my eyes.

Soon, Mr George began promising marriage. He showed me what would be possible in my life if I married him. He’d buy me cars, he’d buy me a house, he’d not let my children suffer, and he’d compensate Matthew.

It took me quite a long time, but I gave in. The most important part of Matthew’s life was his family: me and his three kids. But I had to shatter that mirror. I told him I was tired of the marriage.

He told me Mr George had contacted him. He refused his money. He wasn’t going to give up his family, he begged me. He let me see the distance we’ve covered to this point. But all that never mattered to me anymore. All I could see was a new and beautiful life with Mr George.

He wanted to keep the kids and I let him. But I promised I’d always make sure they were fine.

Matthew was bitter, but I knew he was a strong man, no matter how many times life had slapped him on the face, he never broke, he won’t now.

I only prayed that at the end of the day, he found his luck.
