I MUST TRAVEL ABROAD BY ANY MEANS

Dear readers,

I’ve been on the issue of travelling abroad for many years now, yet I’ve not been chanced even to reach the airport. I lost about 2million naira to scammers on this issue. Yet, nothing has changed. I still want to leave this country by all means.

I’ve been abused in so many ways in this country. I don’t want to tolerate it anymore. Everywhere you go in Nigeria, you are faced with different forms of oppression especially when you are not connected. When you are not connected, you are not relevant.

That was how my brother gave me a short knicker with army colour. I wore it proudly on a Saturday morning and went opposite my house to get washing soap.  Suddenly, I saw a man who gave me a hot slap from the back. Without hesitating, I gave him two slaps in return. Three other men came down from a car parked across the road in army uniform. I still didn’t know what my offence was until the three of them started beating me like an animal.

People gathered around us in no time and started begging them to pardon me. I was shouting at the top of my voice that I didn’t do anything to them. One of the soldiers reached for my knicker and tore it with razor and I was left with my shirt and only my pant. Thank God I wore pant that day. They really tormented and humiliated me. They even asked me to frog jump which I could not disobey. People were really many at the scene but no one dared to move close to me. Not until those people were tired did they leave me alone. It was a terrible experience.

One other day like that, I went to the bank to make a transaction. There was a long queue which was moving at a snail pace. It got to a point that the queue wasn’t moving at all. At the long run, I managed to get to the fore front and only two people were ahead of me. I then noticed that the people at the counter were not even attending to those on line. They were busy attending to big people who felt they were too big to line up with less privileged ones.

What surprised me most was that a young girl who just came in to the bank, walked straight to the counter. She told them she was sent by someone I’m sure was known to them and they answered her immediately. Still standing at the 3rd position on the line, they attended to five side customers. Nobody uttered a word despite the way they treated us.

So it is everywhere in Nigeria. You get cheated and chanced by people you are not up to. You can’t call them to court because you don’t have the money to run the case. Even if you loan money because you are angry and needs justice, you can’t win because you don’t know people at the top. If the son of a rich man kills, the case will be closed down but, if the son of a poor man kills, he’ll be hanged to death.

The country is so full of corruption that there’s no little sect where there is no favouritism. I’m so fed up of the country and want to travel out. I want to experience the outer world for some time. When I’m made, I’ll definitely come back and put things right in the little way I can.
