What Else Does A Woman Want?
Weaker sex indeed! I wonder where they got that one from because the sooner you think she is a saint; the more dangerous she is. As a matter of fact, give a woman the entire world, and she would still stab you at the back. Don’t think I hate women; but if you still think that is exactly the case after reading this, then I have no apology! Yes you read that one right, no apology for everything I am about to write.
Mercy came into my life at a time when she and her family were practically feeding from hand to mouth. I mean they were struggling; and my appearance in her life couldn’t have come at a better time. I met her when I was coming back from church one Sunday morning just as she was about crossing the road that leads to her house. I stopped the car as she was about crossing with her younger sister. On getting to the other side of the road, she waved to say thank you. It was then that I noticed this innocent smile at the corner of her mouth.
The second time I saw her was also on a Sunday; but this time it was in the morning. I tried to give her a lift to church, but she said thank you, and that her church was just down the road. I didn’t pressure her because it was damn too early in the morning; so there was no time to do that. As fate would have it, we met that same Sunday after the Holy Communion Service and we had a few minutes chat. She told me her name, but refused to tell me her address. The cat and mouse game of trying to know her address continued for weeks before she eventually said yes; and that was how we both started dating.
Dear readers, I met Mercy at a time when she was looking for money to buy her PCE form; and according to her, I couldn’t have come at a better time. I practically sponsored her education all through her years in the polytechnic. I was also responsible for almost everything in her house. Her parents didn’t allow any man come near her after I made my intentions known to them. I told them I was interested in marrying Mercy, and that was why they always gave me opportunity to see her always.
After graduation, and her youth service, Mercy started playing games with me. I forgot to add that she was already working during this period, and was also keeping late nights. All attempts to involve her parents in the matter proved abortive as she proved to be someone who was a bit too heady for them. I made all efforts to settle down with her, but to no avail. Sometimes I would come to her house to find her with a particular guy. I later discovered that she met that same guy while she was doing her youth service. Sometimes this same guy would be the one to drop her off from work, and once she sees me she would just say hi, spend a few minutes with me, and tell me she wants to go in and rest.
The strangest part of this was that the parents were not saying anything until one evening when they called me to come over and see them. Frankly, I thought they called me so Mercy and I could finalise a couple of things; but I was wrong.
When I got to their house that evening, I was handed an envelope containing a letter. Mercy’s parents didn’t say a word until I had finished reading the shocking letter, which contained a confirmation of my worst fear all these months; Mercy wanted me out of her life.
She was no longer interested in me because she said she couldn’t marry someone from my part of the country. How on earth? I mean it’s no secret that Mercy and I are not from the same part of the country, and how come she didn’t complain about it until now? She even mentioned in her letter that her parents never wanted me as a son in-law; and that one too shocked me.
Her dad then told me that I should take heart that God would give me someone that loves me and who is from my part of the country. He said they tried convincing some extended family members, but to no avail. As he was speaking, I quietly stood up, made for the door, and drove off in my car.
It’s been a couple of weeks since I got that shocking letter and not one phone call from Mercy; not even a text message from her. The last time I heard anything about her, someone told me she was already married.
I feel used and dumped by a small girl who feels she is smart. I feel used by a family who under the guise of tribalism cruelly showed me the way out of their lives after making a fortune out of me.
I feel so sick and feel like revenging but don’t even know what to do or how to go about it. Will this inter- tribal marriage issue ever stop?
