With each passing day, Nigeria seems to be recording a very high rate of child sexual molestation. This is not only disturbing as children between the ages of four and twelve are reportedly being abused in one way or the other; it also raises a lot of concerns as to how rotten our society has become in recent years.
Sadly, Nigeria is experiencing a moral decline, with the society not putting up enough fight to nip this in the bud. Maybe you could say we are a bit worried, but the writing is obviously all over the wall if you cast your mind back to how parents failed to curb the incessant flooding of internet cafes and business centres by youths to watch online porn. Most secondary school pupils now have porn movies stored on their mobile or smartphones. Things are not getting any better in that front if you ask me.
Perhaps, more worrying is the number of children being raped in the society these days. If they are not being raped in lecture rooms today, they are being molested by men old enough to be their grandpas somewhere in a quiet compound when everyone else has gone to work or school. How the heck did we get to this stage? Mothers too are lost for words, and are also looking for answers.
Perhaps, we watch too much of Hollywood movies; and that has taken its toll on our men and women, or how else can one explain the reason why our daughters are being ravaged by these predators?
Again we blame it on the way our ladies dress these days. Be that as it may, can rape be justified based on how a woman dresses? When a man is caught for raping, the next he says is: “the devil pushed me.” Damn… How did we get to this stage? Are we not gradually degenerating into the level of that popular country called….? A country now synonymous with high level of rape cases every day?
I am not trying to sound like an alarmist, but shouldn’t we be concerned? Shouldn’t we be adopting stricter methods to deal with this dangerous trend that is threatening the future of our daughters? If things are ever going to get better, then it has to start now. We have to kick this monster called rape out of our society, or else our maternity centres would be filled with teenagers trooping in for antenatal. Even more worrisome is the fact that our girls may not have a future as a result of being exposed to sexually transmitted infections.
Not an alarmist like I said…just calling our attention to monster that needs to be tamed before we all get drowned.
