Is It Right To Date A Close Relative?

People interpret who a close relative is in different ways and from different perspective. Oftentimes, a definition of a close relative is based on acceptable standard. What works for one may definitely not work for another.

Generally we all have people we describe as close relatives. These people could be our cousins, but definitely not siblings. If you were asked to get married to a close cousin, would you oblige? Is it a sin to get married to a relative from your mother’s or father’s side? If it is not a sin, is it a taboo?

Some religions forbid this, but some have nothing against and have actually encouraged it for different reasons, which we won’t be able to cover here. However, it remains a debatable issue as a lot of people have gone to “war” over this. When it comes to tradition and culture of some Africans, it is almost impossible to convince the other that yours is superior. Despite claiming to have respect for the beliefs and traditions of others, we still find it difficult to accept some things we hear and come across. Is it right or wrong to date or even marry a close relative?
