One of the basic things you will be judged at and measured at, especially if you live in a place like Nigeria, is marriage. If you have past a certain age, with good job, comfortable apartment, and a car; then the society expects you to find a wife and settle down. However, the pressure to settle down may start coming from left, right, and centre if you are not showing any signs of getting married.
Sometimes I wonder where some of these things come from. Our society has a way of tagging you with certain unpleasant things if you haven’t achieved or measured up to a particular standard in life. Take marriage for instance, the society sees any many who is not yet married as unserious. So is it right to refer a man who is unmarried as an irresponsible person?
Why do we always view men who though, have attained the minimum age to get married, as unserious? Is marriage the yardstick to measure a man’s achievement in life? What if he has other plans that do not accommodate marriage at the moment? Is it right to label him as an unserious individual?
