Sometimes in a bid to get the best out of an employee, some employers insist that she signs a pre-agreement form that bars her from getting pregnant for a particular period of time. Sometimes this usually takes place before the employee is given an appointment or employment letter. Considering the high unemployment rate in Nigeria and to an extent in other countries in Africa, is it ideal for a woman to be compelled to sign such an agreement?
Should a woman be made to sign such form just because she desperately needs a job? Does the law of the land allow such to happen? If you found yourself in such a situation where you have to choose between your job and getting pregnant, what would you do? Would you call the bluff of your employer and walk away or simply comply with his instructions?
How should such a situation be handled back home? As a man, how would you react? Would you encourage your wife to go ahead and accept the job offer based on such a condition? Won’t you feel threatened as a man or would you simply ask her to throw in the towel or refuse the job offer?
