Dear readers, how do I tell my father in-law I don’t want to work for him anymore?
I earn one of the biggest salaries in the company where I work at the moment, which belongs to my husband’s father. In fact it is a job I am not naturally qualified for based on my academic qualification and lack of experience. I got the job because I am married to my boss’s son, Layode.
How it all started…
After our wedding, Layode asked me to resign my appointment at my place of work and come work with and for his dad. Though, I was a bit sceptical about accepting the offer, the salary offer was too good to be ignored. Besides, I didn’t have the courage to say no to a job offer from a man of his status. I got the job on a platter, but I feel I could do with another job at the moment because of the following reasons…
Where it went wrong…
I was employed as an assistant to the Human Resources Manager, with a good salary to go with it. Things worked fine at first, but few weeks into the job, my father in-law started asking me to do other assignments different from what I was hired for.
Sometimes he would send me to pick up his grandchildren (my husband’s nephews and nieces) from school. This normally happens when their mother goes to the United Kingdom on her usual shopping spree. At other times, he would send me out to eateries to get him lunch. I never saw anything bad in some of these little errands due to the fact that he is my father in-law. However, things started turning for the worse when my mother in-law would call from home and ask me to go to the market to buy her some cooking stuffs.
Now the worse has happened as my father in-law called me while I was heading home from work the other day; and guess what he wanted me to do? Dear readers, my boss wants me to only report to work three times a week, and on the other two days, he wants me to report at the family home to spend time with my mother in-law.
This is simply unacceptable! I barely worked for him for eight months, and he has turned me into a housemaid. The situation is quite awkward because he is one of the most respectable persons in the society, and I can’t even stand up to him to tell him my mind.
I tried bringing up the issue with my husband the other day, and his response showed he would have none of it. Layode feels I am eternally grateful to his family for finding a place in the company for me.
Please help, I am in a big mess and don’t know how to get out of the web that has entangled me.
