You never realise some things your whole life until a certain question is thrown to you and you just freeze and wonder about how unfair things have been. You tell your whole system to wait and wake up from the routine you’ve soaked yourself in.
It is self punishment, you never spoke about the burns you get, you never discussed how uncomfortable you were, your body accepted the burns and you live with them, thinking it’s a norm. The day you become woke becomes the day you gain freedom.
This would not be a big deal to many, especially because it’s a norm, but whether it is a big deal or a small one, what is not right is not right.
I promised my family I was going to cook vegetable soup, it’s our favourite and because of that I seldom cook it…
…Before we go further I’d love that you pick out this tested routine that I kept up with; when I realized my family loved vegetable soup and everyone dance to no music when I’m in the kitchen with it, I decided that I’d rather cook it once in a while just so they don’t get too used to it. So any time I need that special joy, I know exactly what to do.
So I headed to the market after work to get the vegetables, I was hell tired from work plus there was a traffic jam and I had to run from one taxi or motorcycle to the other just so I get home before George, he gets paranoid when there’s no food on the table.
We’d had the discussion the previous day that I’d cook very early in the morning before work but I’d woke very late and promised myself I’d get it done by evening.
At the market, I was running all around looking for vegetables, I was too late most of the woman who sold in the market had gone home, but I knew George would be upset if there was no soup at the end of the day so I kept on running around.
Thankfully, I met a fat lady already getting ready to leave. I was relieved. I approached her hurriedly and asks if she could still sell.
“Yes nah, since you’re going to pay,” she said.
I told her how much I was buying and as hurriedly as I can, brought out the money in my pulse and paid

Thankful I met a fat Lady already getting ready to leave. I was relieved. I approached her hurried and asks if she could still sell.
“Yes nah, since you’re going to pay,” she said.
I told her how much I was buying and as hurriedly as I could, I brought out the money in my pulse and paid her. And out of relief I said, “Thank you, if I hadn’t gotten these, it’d be a tug of war at home, my husband wouldn’t like it.” Then I later grumbled, “it was a lot today at my office.” Already moving ahead.
“Wetin do your husband? Hand de pain am? Some men sha, shay you’re coming from work at this time?” She said.
I paused and had a flash thought, but waved it off and said, smiling. “Nà man nah.” And I left. Although I knew there was a shift in my heart already.
Going back home was another hell for me. The traffic was really bad and I had to let my car stay where I left it. I tried as much as I could, but I got home late. When I got in, I met George staring at his wrist watch and my kids sprawling on the floor and the couch.
He was so furious with me, he started with the kids and then him. I apologized but he wouldn’t listen, then I fired back at him. There was nothing wrong in him cooking, he had a 9 to 5 job, so do I, but that’s it for him, every other headache is mine. I had to do the laundry, look after everything that had to do with kids, cook and all.
I didn’t realize the extent of my words on time, but I knew it was all triggered by the lady in the market. After I’d said much, my senses returned to me and I felt like I’d committed a crime. George was a good man and I said too much for his kind of person, but even if I felt remorse, one thing was clear enough, what I’d said can’t go back in my mouth.
And to my surprise, George didn’t realize I had too much, just I didn’t realize until that woman threw those few statements at me at the market.
He apologized and we had to make food together that night. And it was one of my best times with my family.
