A lot of noise and statements have been made about our lack of maintenance culture in Nigeria. Just to add to that, did you know that Nigerians spend billions of Naira annually importing wines and other beverages? The other day, the internet and social media sites were filled with stories of how a serving senator of the Federal Republic branded bottles of champagne in a party either organized for him or organized by him. Sometimes in August, pictures of a rich politician surfaced online where he was pictured partying the night away with some ladies around him. That brings us to the question of the day: are Nigerians truly wasteful in their spending?
Are we misplacing our priorities and putting the cart before the horse? You will even be amazed to learn that some Nigerians take loans from the banks to organize burial ceremonies for the dead; is that not shocking? Despite the state of the economy and the fact that some civil servants are earning just 18,000 Naira monthly as minimum wage, you still find celebrities flying out of the country to spend millions of Naira to organize birthday parties for their girlfriends. Can’t something be done about the way we spend? Can’t we call ourselves to order in order to save our dying economy?
