Did you know that Angela Merkel is the first former citizen of the German Democratic Republic to become the first chancellor of a united Germany? A woman of many firsts; she was sworn in as the first woman chancellor of Germany after defeating Chancellor Gerhard Schröder in 2005 by just three seats.

Angela Merkel was on July 17, 1954, in Hamburg, Germany to a Lutheran pastor and teacher, Merkel grew up in a rural area north of Berlin in the then German Democratic Republic. Merkel studied physics at the University of Leipzig where she earned a doctorate degree in 1978, and later worked as a chemist at the Central Institute for Physical Chemistry, Academy of Sciences (1978–90).
