Someone Somewhere

A HARD WORKING MAN I KNOW

So Tunde came home that evening with a long face, and said quite less; plus he also agreed to, virtually, everything I said and was in a hurry to go to bed, and I was sure something was, palpably, wrong.

I tried my best not to prod, I just vaguely thought it was the effect of a terrible day at the office and he’d get over it by morning or so. So we slept.

During the nights, he was restless, he would get off bed to the kitchen, disturb the plates, turn on the tap and again turn it off and he back to the room, he put on the light, search for something in our cupboard and turned the light off.

He’s a dramatic person, and he could be an ass most times. He’s aware I am the kind who don’t intrude, I stay my lane and make sure you stay in yours, but I’ll always come over to help, hear you out, or anything, if you ask me to. In case we’d have to present ourselves in court, I have enough alibi to make do with. Being a lawyer has taught me that one can’t be too careful.

Tunde was a sales person in the big retail generator office he worked and he just found the job recently. He’d put enough effort into his life and always wanted to provide for the family because I had my rules laid out before hand, so he just wanted to meet up. We met barely two years now and we’d moved in together. We share the same age, 47, and we wanted to make life happen as quickly as possible since, to my believe, we were running out of time.

I hadn’t married before, likewise Tunde. According to him, he’s always on the run for jobs and always never had enough. For me, I had enough for myself. At least he stayed in my apartment and he ate my food and used my money before he found his job.

I needed a man, but my taste were high, you meet up as a man, and I’d love you forever. Failure was like a stale sickening smell to me, when you have it around you, I prob you to jettison it.

The next morning, he left for work so early and we didn’t had much talk at all. I wanted to ask, but since he was so reclusive, I backed off. I was the mind-your-business kind of lady.

This continued for a month, I was just busy with my court cases and had less time to bother over Tunde’s headache. Each time I intended asking, something always came to take the moment away, and it was, most of the time, my work.

As usual, he brought his salary to the table, we had a discussion on how it could be used and the part of it that could be saved. We always did this, because I thought I was better with money and would teach him how to handle his salary at the end of each month. It was more or less like he was giving me reports every month.

Tunde still stayed up every night, most times, hanging on his laptop, other times, scribbling something in his jotter.

Body no be firewood, he slept off on his laptop one day, and I had to take a look on what he was doing, and quite astonished, I saw he was on JOBAMAN and other job searching sites looking for a job.

I was quite confused, because he went to work every morning. Then I vaguely settled to think he might be having too many hard times at work so he wanted to change work.

So, one morning, I was in a hurry to work because I had too much to do at the office. He was out before me. But I didn’t waste time at home either as I used to.

I got to the office and I had to meet a client around town. It was on my way to the said rendezvous, I saw my would be husband working in a bricklaying site. He was so busy he didn’t see my car, he was running from one place to the other with bricks or cement. I was heart broken…

…I just drove ahead to my client. All the while, I cried in my heart, because I just realised it was all my fault that he kept it to himself and tried to meet up the needs. It was obvious that he loved me, he didn’t want to lose me, so he found a way to keep the money coming even when he was actually jobless.

That evening was his evening, I baked a cake, wore a shirt that had “I am sorry, honey” written on it. I told him I knew everything now and I hadn’t been loving as he. I didn’t let him go out to that job anymore, I just let him search for a job conveniently and made life sweet for him.

The end.
