Nigerians are so used to not keeping to time. You give a Nigerian man a 12 pm appointment, and he turns up hours late—and sometimes with no apologies. While we recognize the fact that other factors could have caused his arriving late for an appointment, is it not a bad habit to keep repeating the same thing always? Why don’t we like keeping to time as agreed?
It is so painful that every time an invitation to an occasion is being announced, one of the things you hear from the announcer is: “no African time.” This is quite worrisome and needs to be checked. What is the idea and reason behind the African time? It seems we have come to accept that as our way of life and no one seems to be that bothered about it anymore.
What does coming late to an event tell you about yourself? Does it portray you as a discipline person? How do people view or rate you in terms of keeping to an appointment? Do they value and respect you more when they know you as a person who keeps to time? Do they look down on you when they know you as a person who doesn’t keep to time?
