Did you know that the number of people who actually come out to declare to the entire world that they have been raped is lower than those who don’t open up? In Nigeria, a lot of ladies would rather keep things under wrap instead of opening up; which sort of make it difficult for the government or the society to do something about it. How can the law take its due course when no one comes out to report a case of sexual abuse? As a matter of fact, some rape victims leave in denial; and this is particularly annoying when their obvious proofs to help them fight their case.
So why do rape victims in Nigeria keep mute over their plight or experience? Is it ideal for someone who has been raped to brush the experience off her mind and continue acting as if nothing ever happened? Could it be fear? Are they scared of being stigmatized by the society? Is it a case of the victim admitting that she was responsible for what happened to her? Perhaps, there is more to this issue called rape than meets the eye because how else can one explain that sexual abuse is a terrible thing and must not be covered?
