Why Do Most Nigerian Parents Give More Priority To The Male Child?

Why do most Nigerians give or grant more priority attention to the male child? Is it a matter of tradition or the mentality of the African that a girl child doesn’t offer as much guarantee to a family than a male child? As a parent, is it right to relegate your female child to the background?

Who would you rather invest your limited resources on?

Actually times have changed and people seem to be changing their views about how they treat the girl child, but this only happens in only a limited number of homes. The male child still enjoys more priority attention than the girl child. What should be done to deal with this pathetic condition? Shouldn’t a girl child be accorded similar attention and care as the male child?

How it happens…

Some Africans are of the view that the male child is the one that gives hope in terms of keeping the family name and tradition alive. They feel that their name no longer rings a bell as soon as the female child is married. This is so controversial that some men whose wives are unable to bear a male child gets desperate and desire a male child even from other women.
