How does the superlative form of a word turn around to become its enemy, not just its enemy but sworn enemy, It just contrives within itself to do that (all things being equal). I’ll throw some more light on this.
Man in his natural state craves comfort, succor, bliss, luxury, and the list goes on. So at a point where man seemingly attains a level of this, he just tends to relax and gets content. You say to yourself “at least I’ve tried, from zero naira to four naira”. When you get to this stage, its moved from ‘hustle and bustle’ to ‘comfortable’, and then you relax a bit more, and of course why not? You can afford to feed well, you’re mobile, can foot necessary bills, and you really at peace with yourself, and begin to compare yourself with those you’re doing better than. What’s happening to you here? You’re blinded and don’t see the need to strive for more… because there’s always more. What follows? You then begin to work at the same pace without really seeing beyond your nose, not bearing in mind that there’s a whole lot waiting to be conquered. Remember it is said that “to be the best, you have to beat the best”. To ‘be’, you have to ‘beat’, and you don’t beat by resting on your oars, there’s a battle to be fought, so you have to pick yourself up fight and win! You can’t be the best when you are satisfied with the little you have been able to gather along the way. Some even go overboard and say “those guys up there are using something else, it just can’t be ordinary, let me enjoy the little success I’m enjoying”. But really those guys aren’t just doing the ordinary things you do, there’s something extra about what they do, and that’s why they are not on the same level with you, it’s called foresight, they have a target they are gunning for, that’s the pinnacle! Now, the lazy ones forget that if they really want to get something, they go after it with all they’ve got. You don’t get what you do not ask for, or do you? It’s like the computer language, “garbage in garbage out!”
Summing it all up, I’ll say, at the inception of any endeavor, set your sight at being better than the best, and at the least, you become the best, but if you set out for less or nothing, you’ll be satisfied with any little level of progress you make, and that can be cancerous! Be warned!
