Matters of the Heart

The Pain Of Being A Single Mother-My Side Of The Story

“I know this might hit you below the belt, but I just had to do it. Please do find a place in your heart to forgive me. What a wife you would have been if things hadn’t turned the way they did. I am so sorry I don’t see a future of you and I together. I pray that God brings a man that will love you and your cute little baby without prejudice.
“I am sorry to let you know that my mum frowns at our proposed union based on the fact that you already have a child from another man. Please do not expect my calls, text and chats anymore.”
That sums up the story of my life ever since Eddy got me pregnant while I was in college. My little son, Felix is a mix of joy and sadness. He’s all I have got in this lonely world; but seeing him every time reminds me of the day his father walked into my life—that cursed afternoon in the remote part of Ibadan. He stole my innocence and denied he ever knew me in the presence of everyone, including my parents, principal, teachers, and colleagues at school at the time.
Dear Iyanda, if you ever find this piece good or touchy enough to post on your blog please give it enough mention on the social media so that other girls or ladies can learn from this.
This might not be the lot of all single mothers out there, but the truth is that not everyone wants have anything to do with you as a single parent. In Nigeria we treat single mothers like plagues. I have lost my appetite for dating and hoping that a caring and loving man would ever come my way.
What haven’t I suffered? I have been dumped two weeks to my wedding in the past. I have had people I trusted lock me out of their homes because they discovered that I am a single mother. My heart has been broken, shattered, and battered more times than I can remember.
It is a crime to be a single mum in Nigeria. Life has punished me for the sins of my past more times than I deserve.
It is easier to say I won’t lose sleep over the last heartbreak I suffered, which occurred only last month—I can only pray that God grants me the courage to walk this long route to recovery.
