Love At First Sight Doesn’t Exist

Love at first sight is something I have heard on different occasions; and to be frank, I thought it existed until I got my fingers burnt with my last ‘love.’ You just have to follow my short story to understand how a lady I thought I fell in love with the first time I met her almost ruined my life.

I met Mary a couple of years ago while attending a friend’s party on the island. It was to me love at first sight. It was almost impossible not to fall in love with such a calm and amiable lady considering how charming she looked and the fact that I was looking to feel a void created by the exit of my last girlfriend.

Mary and I got off to a flying start because she also was looking for someone to kick-start her life with afresh. Things started faster than we both expected as we quickly exchanged addresses and we started visiting each other. My friends were happy, but some of them didn’t hide their scientism especially how quick things had turned out between the two of us. Perhaps, I was blind or shall I say I was naïve; but the truth is that I wanted something solid with Mary.

Our relationship did kick off to a flying start like I said earlier, and before you could say Jack Robinson, we started making marital plans. I proposed to her and she accepted without hesitation; and all these happened within the first year of our relationship. I mean there is nothing wrong in getting married to a woman who seems to have brought back the fire that was once dead in you. Mary brought back the fire in me, and the need to probe her past lifestyle and family didn’t occur to me.

However, as plans to get married started gathering momentum, Mary’s attitude towards me started changing. She no longer kept to appointments, and never maintained the same enthusiasm that we started with. I asked if I had done something wrong, but she said no. She was however, bold and courageous enough to open up to me that the fire she was felt for me had suddenly died down and that she was struggling to love me with the same intensity that she started with. This bothered me and actually threw me off-balance because I was already seeing her as the mother of my unborn children.

The point is I didn’t force Mary to accept my proposal, and why she suddenly changed her mind is what baffles me. Now she doesn’t even want to discuss marriage and would rather pretend as if nothing ever existed between us. This was a lady who confessed that she never believed in love at first sight until she met me; now all that have changed.

Does love at first sight really exist? I am so confused now because the love I thought I also have for her has gradually faded away and I am beginning to develop apathy towards her just the same way she did.
