Is It Right For Christian Universities To Charge High School Fees Even From Members?

This is one of the most controversial topics you will ever come across these days. A lot of Nigerians are baffled, and people keep asking the same question over and over again. What could be the reason for the high fees being demanded by Christian Universities in Nigeria? Is it right for Christian Universities to charge high school fees even from their members? Can such astronomical fees be justified in whatever circumstance?

The Christian Universities have tried to justify the reason for charging such high fees; and to an extent they have some valid reasons. However, some Nigerians too have come out to say ask certain questions. They want to know why the schools can’t charge lesser fees from their members—after all, the schools were allegedly built from the offerings and tithes of these same members.

Can’t the government do something about it? In a country where the minimum wage is 18,000 Naira; can the child of an average Nigerian afford to attend such universities where the annual school fees surpass the total income? Does the law forbid the government from regulating these fees?

As a member of one of the Churches, do you feel aggrieved that your children are unable to attend a school built from your own contribution?
