How I Almost Got Initiated Into The Marine World

The truth is it was not easy making up my mind whether to write this or not as I perfectly understand that some things that easy to explain. To be honest I changed my mind so many times about writing this as many times I change my shirts every month. It wasn’t easy, but the truth is that I want you to learn from what I passed through.

Dear readers, I know the story you are about to read may not be peculiar to me as there are lots of people who have either been initiated or almost got initiated into some dark kingdoms without their knowledge. My story is quite extraordinary in the sense that God demonstrated just how much he loves me by helping me to escape unscathed.

Please understand that no name will be mentioned as I would love to keep things a little bit anonymous at least for reasons best and only known to me.

A few years ago, I went to the school where I did my National Diploma so I could process admission for my Higher National Diploma (HND). Already I was a year behind some of my course mates; and so I didn’t have any problem with where to stay during those periods because some of my course mates during the ND days where already studying for their HND.

So it was during those periods that I met the lady that almost succeeded in initiating me into the marine world. Before I got to school, a lot had been said about my ability to write poems, and speak like an orator. My friends had said so much about me, and she was already dying to meet this ‘poet’ or romantic person so much and so well spoken of. Call it naivety or whatever because I didn’t waste too much time in making things happen since my friends already gave me all the lowdown I needed to hit the ground running for this lady.

We started a relationship almost immediately, and before you could say Jack Robinson; I started passing the night in her room. Of course, she lived outside town because the school was designed not to have hostel accommodation. I was supposed to spend a couple of days in school to finalize my admission process; but ended up spending close to two weeks because I was gradually falling in love with this lady in question.

Somehow she was a good cook, but that was the weapon she used in attracting me even more because I was already very broke then. I need to say that a lot of people that have been initiated into one kind of kingdoms or the other were tempted with either foods or money or even women. The thing is it was difficult for me to know she was that kind of a lady since she was an avid church goer and a member of the choir; how foolish I was. Everyone sees her as an innocent young lady who any man would wish to take home to mama; so I got fooled.

Few days before I started getting suspicious of the kind of lady she was, she had prepared me some very delicious vegetable and Amala for supper. We both ate together, and from nowhere, she brought a bottle of wine, which we both drank together. It was the perfect night for her because she knew what she wanted; and it was the night that almost destroyed the destiny God gave me. I fell for it because no sooner had we gone to bed and I slept off that I saw myself flying in the dream; but strangely not with wings.

I jumped out of bed and what I saw confused me even more because the lady was sleeping with her legs facing a different direction. I didn’t know where the courage came from but I slapped her on her lap and screamed at her to get up. I didn’t check the time, but I knew it was late in the night. Before losing my courage, I asked her if she was an Ogbanje as the Igbos call it or Emere as Yorubas call it. She placed her hands over my mouth the instant I mentioned the word Emere, and asked me not to raise my voice. She promptly denied my accusations, and asked us to go back to sleep. Sleep; who would dare go to bed when the roof is on fire? That was the day that I murdered sleep because even though I never went to her house to pass the night until I returned back to Lagos; everyday became a nightmare.

I was able to confide in some of my friends; and it was then one of them started telling me of strange things that have been happening. Of course, she didn’t lay low because she started appearing to me and inviting me to come to the river with her. These things continued all through my stay, and even after I got to Lagos. I had to open up to my mum when the pressure became unbearable; then she took me to her pastor who prayed along with me until I finally got my deliverance.

Another thing that made things so difficult for me those days was the fact that I opened my mouth wide. I told my friends what happened; and that also marked the beginning of nights of fear and horror dreams. My friends didn’t enjoy their nights thereafter like I said; but somehow things faded away or maybe something happened, which I have no knowledge of till date.

God delivered me from the snare of the fowler, and made my feet like that of a deer so I could escape from the enemy that first appeared as a friend. Today, I am a teacher in the Sunday school, and the best part of my present and of course, my future is the fact that I have a God who saw my today before protecting me from the one that almost destroyed me a few years back.

Jesus is my Lord, He is my king; and my faithfulness to Him will forever remain steadfast.
