Our system in Africa permits us to do a lot of things, including those things that are considered to be absurd in other climes. For instance, your mother could come spend some time with you and your spouse. She could even take some major decisions on your behalf and even determine how you live with your spouse. In the eastern part of Nigeria for instance, the mother of the woman comes to spend three months after the wife is delivered of a baby. This is not allowed in other parts of the world.
However, there are times when the man decides to invite his mum to stay with him for a while in order to make her happy. This could lead to minor or major issues between the wife and the man’s mother. The mother of the man could sometimes get herself involved in some private decisions that should have been left to the couples.
As a man, would you ask your mum to leave your home if there is an existing conflict between she and your spouse? Would you support your wife and talk rashly to your mum for interfering in your marriage? How would you tackle such an issue?
