“Police is your friend” is a powerful inscription you find in many police stations across Nigeria. The question I always love to ask it; could this statement be true? When you experience something terrible in the hands of our policemen, what comes to your mind? Do you always feel like the masses are being fooled with such a statement? How do you feel if on the other hand a policeman treats you like a king or a queen? Do you feel like you are in a secure environment and in safe hands?
I know a lot of people will argue against this statement and feel it is just an image thing; but is that bad? I mean is the relationship between the public and the police that bad? Actually not too many people trust the Nigerian police; but not everyone can deny the fact that they have been helped by the police at one time or the other.
So what is your view on this statement? Is the police truly a friend or a foe; especially in the time of trouble or emergency? What has been your worst experience when dealing with the men in black?
